Webinar Overview

Chaired by Farmers Guardian editor Katie Jones, this episode sees MSD Animal Health Technical Advisor Stephanie Small joined by Macie Graham, herd manager at Graham Farms in Cumbria, to explore how monitoring technology can support the critical transition period as heifers move into the milking herd. Macie shares her experience of using SenseHub data to manage heat stress on farm — including its impact on milk yield and abortions — and explains how early detection of a mannheimia health event in the herd prevented the issue from becoming more serious in heifers. She discusses the time-saving advantages of collar technology and remote monitoring, while emphasising the importance of adding the human element alongside the data. With a focus on growing heifers efficiently and breeding them effectively, Macie also outlines plans to introduce EID tagging to further strengthen individual animal management. Stephanie provides the technical backdrop, covering heat detection and fertility management in youngstock, the role of behaviour monitoring in spotting health issues early, and how technology can give farmers the confidence to make faster, better-informed decisions during one of the most demanding stages of a heifer's life.

Herd Manager, Graham Farms

Macie Graham is herd manager at Graham Farms, Greenriggs, near Wigton in Cumbria — part of the MSD Animal Health Demonstration Farm Network. She is responsible for the day-to-day management of a 460-cow Holstein Friesian herd, which calves all year round and averages 11,500 litres per lactation. The herd is milked twice daily through a 20/40 herringbone parlour and is predominantly housed, with low yielders grazing for six to seven months. The farm also produces 230 heifers per year and 240 beef calves, including 60 Wagyu crosses. Macie works alongside farm owners John and Johnny Graham and youngstock manager Beverly Hennessy, with the team supported by SenseHub Dairy collar technology for heat detection, health monitoring and rumination tracking. The farm is currently expanding, with plans to grow the herd by 100 cows over the next two years alongside upgrades to housing and milking facilities.
